Adjective Detective

The Adjective Detective is a fun online game I just found out about from Technology & Learning.  This game explains what an adjective is and provides a lot of interactive exercises siting examples.  Also, it has students being a detective and finding the adjectives (i.e. superlative and comparative) by highlighting them in a sentence w/ a magnifying glass.  Finally, there is a short quiz to help reinforce learning.

BoomWriter

BoomWriter is a fantastic free online educational tool (ideal for grades 3rd-8th) that schools everywhere are using to help their students Reading/Writing skills.  This is done through an innovative collaborative writing process where students create a digital story and build it by writing chapter by chapter and voting on which one should be included in the finished product.  Best of all, is the educational portal where teachers create/manage student accounts and receive a free published copy of their class's first book/story.

Write to Read

Writer to Read is an amazing iPad app designed for kids 3-10 yrs to help w/ their Reading & Writing skills by creating a book.  W/ that in mind it also makes it an ideal app for introducing digital storytelling to students that is aligned to Common Core Standards.  The way this works is a child/student write's a sentence to the best of their ability and then an adult/teacher translates the sentence into proper text.  This helps students learn visually as they see their sentenc
e next to the correct one while learning to read, write, and spell.  Another nice feature is the unique keyboard that separates consonants and vowels by color and being able to record audio to help further their learning.

Penzu Classroom

Penzu Classroom is wonderful new web 2.0 site that allows educators/students to create online journals and more.  This is done in a safe environment where educators create a journal/class and then students join via unique code (similar to ClassDojo).  Once a student has joined a class a educator can send assignments, instructions, comment on student's work, etc.  This is a great way for educators to organize and track their students all in one place via the cloud.
Educators can use it for any type of writing assignments, rough drafts, and even use it to "flip" a lesson.

Quill

Quill is an excellent new site for working on proof reading skills such as punctuation and grammar that I just learned about from Richard Byrne's blog.  This site allows students to login and correct Reading passages that teachers have selected.  Best of all, Quill analyzes the results and shows students what they have gotten wrong w/ a walkthrough explaining the correct answer.

Gadzookery

Gadzookery is a wonderful free iOS app that helps students build their Writing and Vocabulary skills.  This can be done by either playing one player or against random opponents where a person tries to create a sentence from a given word.  What makes this nice for educators is that the game comes w/ a built in dictionary/thesaurus to help kids create their sentences.  Scoring is done by each letter and a person can challenge another person (to eliminate their opponent's score) for misspelled/made up words.

BoomWriter Lesson Plans

BoomWriter is a site/company I've worked w/ before has just released a number of lesson plans to help educators integrate BW into their curriculum.  For those that don't know what BoomWriter is, it's a fascinating innovative educational tool that educators are using around the world to turn their students into published authors.  This is all done in a safe environment built around an educational portal where teachers create and manage the student accounts.

The process to create a book is collaborative in nature and quite simple: a story starter is selected (or created from scratch) and each student takes place in writing the next chapter to follow, then anonymously the students read and choose which chapter they like best to include, and the process continues until the story/book is finished.  Upon completing the project an actual physical book can be ordered.  BoomWriter offers new teachers a free class copy of their first finished product and they also have a Technology Heroes program where every student can get their own published copy, for more info on that click here.

As to the BW lesson plans they are all aligned to Common Core Standards, developed by teachers, and are ideal for students grade 3 on up.

If you teach...
  • English Language Arts
  • Special Education
  • ELL
  • Gifted & Talented/Challenge Curriculum
  • Before or After School Programs
…then these lessons are sure to provide your students with a highly engaging and academically effective 21st century learning experience!
